STEAM ENGINES
12 TYPES - 970
UNITS
NOTES: All
engines are coal fired except for the Np units and
switchers. Five "NIAGARAs" will be S.P. GS-4 type. They will be used on The
Phantom passenger trains. The engines are class
"Np" and numbered 1695-1699 inclusive. When diesels are assigned numbers in use
by active steam locomotives the steam locomotives will have a "s" suffix added to their number,
to indicate steam.
USE: This is for normal use
of engines. KEY: S=YARD SWITCHING; P=PASSENGER; F=FREIGHT. DIESEL ENGINES 86 TYPES - 3365 UNITS PASSENGER

CFA 16-4's are the
"C-Liners".
RF-16's are the "SHARKS".
H-24-66's are the "TRAIN
MASTERS".
P40/42/32AC-DMs are the
"GENESIS".
Four sets of 20AP/20APB
(20-23/20B-23B), 22EP/22EPB (40-43/40B-43B), four each 30EP (95-99) and 42GP (345-349) are dedicated The Phantom units. 2 16ASs are to be painted in the The Phantom scheme for Camden/Chicago passenger terminal switching.
A.U. means that there is an
"ANNIVERSARY UNIT" in the numbering series.
GP50 #2650 is the "ANNIVERSARY UNIT" in the
GP50's. It was the first unit delivered in the
SJ&W's anniversary year (1983).
B.U. means that there is a
"BICENTENNIAL UNIT" in the numbering
series. S-12 #201 is the "BICENTENNIAL
UNIT" in the S-12's.
Y2K means that GP38 #2000 is a
special unit painted for the year 2000.
GP20 #1701 is nicknamed the
"ENTERPRISE" and lettering is done in the
MICROGAMMA BOLD EXTENDED typeface. The letters
"N.C.C." precede the numbers on the cab.
RS-3s, AS-16s, and RSD-5s are technically Road Switcher types, but are listed under "Switchers", due to date of purchase. Cab units were still considered "real" freight units for road freights by the SJ&W, though the early Geeps were starting to swing the tide.
See "PAINTING SHEET"
for colors and where located on non-special units. ELECTRIC ENGINES 4 TYPES - 650 UNITS

| CLASS LETTER ------------------ | | | | | | |
| SUB CLASS LETTER ------------ | - | | | | |
| No. OF PRODUCTION RUNS -- | - | - | | |
NOTES: Steam classes are the first letter of the name used for the wheel arrangement, with the exception of the "Challengers" which use "L", as it is the first available letter that was not previously used. Sub classes will start with "a", except for the Np-4's. The sub class letter will show if any modifications were made to a class before the next production run or while in service. The number, with the exception of the Np-4's, will show the number of production runs for a particular class. I.e. The first run of a Pacific wheel arrangement would be a Pa-1, however if any modifications were made during the production run, then the class would change to Pb-1, and if one, or more engines had modifications made to them while in service, after the Pb-1's were in production/service, they would become Pc-1. The same holds true for any other modifications there after, unless the engines were modified the same way (i.e. The production is now Pd-1, but one of the original Pa-1s were changed to reflect Pb-1 changes, then that unit would then become class Pb-1).

NOTES: These tables will not identify RDC/SPV units. They use BUDD model names with the exception of the RDC-5 And the SPVs. Nor do they apply to the EMC Gas Cars (Doodlebugs). If any unit is rebuilt with a different HP engine then the unit number stays the same but the class will change to show new HP rating and the letter "M" added to show that it has been modified (i.e. #50, an E8A, 22EP, is rebuilt w/ 2-2000 hp engines will be re-classed as 40EPM, but remains #50). On 6 axle power, or "Booster" units, the "M" is added after the "6" or "B" (i.e. 25ER6 to 30ER6M or 17EFB to 20EFBM). In all cases the unit number remains the same.
